A Big Fat Lie?

Fans are reacting in droves to the two latest editorials by Crystal Renn. The NYPost just released an article on Crystal Renn called, “A Big Fat Lie” about Crystal’s recent weight loss as a plus model. What prompted this was an editorial for a charity shot by photographer Nicholas Routzen. The second editorial was for V Magazine’s “The Sexy Body Issue”. In both shoots she looks slimmer then she has previously.

To our fans- we hear you! At Madison Plus we act as news source for all things plus; plus size fashion, plus industry news, and plus model coverage. The fashion industry has dubbed Crystal a Plus Model. We have covered her past editorials and they have been very successful with our fans so we have continued to post about her. In the past year Crystal has slimmed down.

Due to this weight loss, do you feel that Crystal is still Madison Plus newsworthy?

Oh, this is tough. I love Crystal Renn. I think she is still news worthy, just not for her weight. I’m feeling pretty bad for her right now with all the “news” coverage she is facing. I’m sure her recent trek and increased workload have had a natural impact on her weight and she will probably gain again once she settles back in. Unfortunately its hard for her fans who have been toting her as the sexiest plus size model; especially when they are also fans of true plus size models who are not getting the same media attention. I’m sure nobody wants to make her fat against her will; it’s just frustrating. The poor girl probably just wants to travel and do her job and not have to worry about who’s complaining about her weight. Thick or thin, I love looking at her. Is that even close to answering your question?

The original photos I’ve seen of Crystal, including the one from her book cover, are just gorgeous. The photo of her in the middle – the one in the dark shirt – is rather scary. If that’s her current ‘look’ and she feels okay about it, great for her, but that’s not an accurate representation of the plus size woman – no matter what the fashion industry says.

The photo of her in the sheer shirt is pretty – but on the borderline of not being plus-size as we generally seem to recognize it. I’ve been a size 24 and now am a size 12 (for health reasons – needed to put my diabetes and heart issues into remission) and there are some who no longer consider me plus-sized, yet the fashion industry still does.

It’s a hard line to walk – and I’m sure there are Crystal fans who feel a bit ‘betrayed’ by her obviously slimmer body in the middle photo, but in the end, it is HER body. I just hope she’s not sliding into a relapse that might damage her health or cost her the life she’s worked so hard to build.

I think Crystal is and will remain relevant as a ground breaking plus size model. She is still not your standard size 0 or -2.

Is the weight scrutiny really necessary? How does the plus sized world of fashion differs from the standard then if this is being made such an issue? Being discriminated against in every media isn’t enough for us to know how not to do it to her?

    That’s how I see it anyway…

I am going to have to vote that Crystal should not be represented as a plus size model anymore and therefore should not be at the fore front of your stories as you are a plus size publication. She is booking job after job in the straight size world and is newsworthy as a model. Does it matter that she has made her fame and fortune by being plus sized? Yes it does. Should she be forced to stay a certain size so that her fans are happy? Absolutely not. She has made the transition from plus size model to straight size to hopefully just “supermodel.” But Madison Plus you have many more up and coming plus size models that are deserving on your attention. Ashley Graham and Lizzie Miller are two that come to mind.

agree with madison. crystal talked about loving her ‘curves’ and so on. to me, plus size is not below a size 14 and crystal is about a 6. i understand that is still plus in the fashion industry but we are all realistic. thanks for asking us! keep up the great work.

I’VE POSTED HERE ABOUT THIS WHOLE ORDEAL, I’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS WHOLE CHAOS AROUND THE NYPOST ARTICLE. I BELIEVE WE SHOUDL LOSE THE POINT HERE. IF WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PLUS SIZE INDUSTRY, SHE DOES NOT REPRESENT WOMEN LIKE MYSELF. IF SHE WANTS TO BE A STRAIGHT SIZE MODEL, MORE POWER TO HER. I JUST HOPE SHES NOT FALLING BACK INTO OLD HABITS.
THE FOCUS HERE SHOULD BE IN THE INDUSTRY AND HOW THEY SHOVE HER DOWN TO US AS THE POSTER CHILD FOR PLUS SIZE WOMEN ACCROSS THIS COUNTRY, AROUND THE WORLD EVEN! AND SHE ISNT REMOTELY CLOSE TO LOOKING CURVY ANYMORE. WHEN I SAW HER NEW PICTURES ON V MAGAZINE, IM SORRY, I COULDNT EVEN SEE BOOBS THERE. REALLY?
    I MEAN, REALLY?
I SAY AND REPEAT IT, AS I HAVE TALKED TO MANY OF MY PLUS SIZE FRIENDS, IF THE PLUS SIZE INDUSTRY WANTS MODELS TO LOOK 8, 10, 12, BOOK THEM WORK WITH STRAIGHT SIZE MODELS, BECAUSE AS FAR AS I’M CONCERN, YOU CAN STILL FIND CLOTHES THERE. THIS IS A PLUS SIZE INDUSTRY, DOES THAT RING A BELL? SHES MAKING MONEY OFF OF FAT WOMEN WHEN SHE BARELY HAS ANY CURVE TO HER!!!!! I FEEL OFFENDED! TO SAY THE LEAST!!! IT’S OFFENSIVE TO PLUS SIZE WOMEN TO SEE SUCH SMALL SIZED MODELS TRYING TO CONVEY TO US HOW THE CLOTHES SHOULD LOOK LIKE ON US. FOR REAL PEOPLE! WAKE UP!

I’m torn, I love Renn, but she does look straight size now and not PLUS size, she’s still stunning and inspiring, and I would love to read news about here, but like you say….it’s a plus size blog.I don’t know…I can’t make up my mind.

I agree with the other poster’s that this is a tough call. I think that when you build your “brand” as one of a plus size model and a model that reflects “real woman.” You go and write a book about your fight with weight and the main stream modeling industry and then loose weight (which i’m very happy for her that she did) I think it is very difficult to then continue to try and remain branded as a plus size model. I think that particular industry is one full of emotion as I, and I’m sure other plus size women, find the idea of plus size models and well made, fashionable plus size clothes to be a very personal issue. When you go into stores and their plus size section consists of a size 12 through 14 and you look at a magazine and their idea of a curvy type to model clothes for a curvy woman is a girl that looks like she has the body of a 12 year old girl that hits us hard. So in closing, I think Crystal was always on the thin side of the plus size spectrum to begin with and now I don’t think she is a plus size model but perhaps, because I do still think she looks healthy and gorgeous, she could help usher in a more healthy looking model type on the main stream modeling side. So I definitely thing she has a future but I think she needs to rebrand herself if this is a weight she plans to stay at for the foreseeable future.

She and her agency need to stop covering the facts up. How can a woman who wears size 6 model for plus size labels? She is definetly skinny enough to model for regular labels and she should do that. Nothing wrong with that.
What is wrong now is that because they’re trying to cover things up is making women angry. They’re pretending nothing is happening when obviously it is. I agree with Valery, no drama if she wants to model regular lines and thin, but not plus. Curvier models should model plus size clothes, I dont see the rocket science behind such simple thing.
She is definetly too far from a curvier woman. And thats not to judge her or where she stands in her life in regards of her weight. But she can’t model for plus size lines.
I for one wont buy clothes from such lines anymore. I refuse it.

Crystal Renn is an amazing model. Right now she’s an amazing slim model – so for me, she’s out of your remit for a while. If she does put the weight back on, then she’s plus size again and you can welcome her back with open arms.

I think we all agree that it doesn’t matter what size she is, what concerns us (and you) is that she’s not held up as a plus size model while she’s sporting this new, slimmer physic.

    Honestly,
I don’t think she is news worthy. She has slimmed down, you can see it.
I do not consider her plus size.
