Jolly and Plus Don’t Mix

Verdi

There has been no shortage of snide comments towards plus size women recently.  Robert Verdi, I thought was on our side.  He has styled numerous curvy and real-sized celebrities like Kathy Griffin, Joy Bahar, Jolie Fisher, and Eva Longoria.

When asked what he thought about the controversial firing of Filippa Hamilton from Ralph Lauren he answered with a highly condescending remark.

“I love fat people because they’re jolly,”

Is that honestly the best you have?   I understand the art of spinning an answer for press by not answering the question, but come-on!! When I think of the word “jolly” I think Santa Claus not a model that is a size 4.

I remember when I was learning how to walk down the runway, I was instructed that plus size models have to always look happy and jolly and that we don’t need to do the more serious and sensual style of walk.  Just ask Crystal Renn if the happy and jolly walk would have been well suited when she strutted her stuff down Jean Paul Gaultiers’ runway.

If the jolly comment that Robert made was not enough to make you angry, have no fear because there is more:

“I think people of all sizes should be wearing clothes. I don’t know if they necessarily need to be photographed in clothes,” he continued. “A lot of women say ‘I should’ve been alive when Ruben was because I’m Rubenesque.”

OK. I agree with him in regards to people of all sizes wearing clothes, I don’t know if a nudist society would be a highly productive one.  I cannot imagine a world without fashion.  However, that is where my agreement ends.  I still clearly remember the day when I received my first Mode magazine and carefully cut out the pictures of the various models featured in editorial shoots, and coveting their look from the pose to the outfit.  Yes, these woman need to be photographed if only to help make otherfashion-loving girls like me feel included.   I gained so much power and confidence from seeing women like me featured and I can only wish this for the next generation.  I know MadisonPlus.com will do its best to fill that void.

Last but not least, to those girls who say they should of lived when Ruben was around, don’t worry because our time will come and I see it peeking around the corner.

Tell me your thoughts??
