What was your favorite news story of 2010? Do you agree with our picks?

British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman is tired of “shock” casting. This is directed to the use of Beth Ditto. She told the UK newspaper The Gaurdian, “Instead of a fuss being made about a few cause célèbre exceptions on the catwalk, what I’d really like instead is for most models to be a size 10 rather than a size 8.”

This is reminiscent of Elle magazine’s cover with Gabby Sidibe where she was featured as a close up shot and while the other celebrity cover models were shown head to toe and there was a large gap between their size and hers.

There is such a fine line that has to be walked and it is easy for the media and the fashion world to start exploiting the use of plus models or plus celebrities to help them gain news coverage, specially when they are above a size 18. I see this happening more and more and while in one hand its great to see more exposure for the plus world but lets do it with the same integrity that is done for the straight size world. When the plus world is included for “shock” value we have not taken any steps forward.

What are your thoughts?

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2011 so far has been the most size diverse runway show for the season, not only did he have Crystal Renn walk the runway he also included Marquita Pring and The Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto. Gaultier was inspired by Joan Jett, the models were rocking black wigs, bold jewelry and Doc Martens.

Marquita spoke with MP about her experience walking the JPL runway.

“The entire experience felt like a dream. I am so honored to have been a part of Gaultier’s show. He’s notorious for putting women of all shapes and sizes on his runway and to have been included in the show was such a rush.
He’s one of the designer’s revolutionizing the industry these days by showing that you don’t have to be skinny to be able to wear beautiful, sexy designer clothing.
It all seemed to flash by in a matter of minutes but will truly be an experience to remember for the rest of my life.”

Crystal Renn proved to be an expert walking down Gaultier’s runway for the second time (first time was back in 2006) she was featured in a black trench and cropped Joan Jett styled hair.

Beth Ditto had the honors of opening the show and joined Gaultier for the final walk down the runway.

I am just so thrilled to see Gaultier feature size diversity on his Spring 2011 runway and I hope that other designers take his lead and follow by featuring more curvy ladies on the runway.

Beth Ditto recently launched her new Evans Collection looking stunning in a her very own floral dress!

The dress works well for her pear shape as it comes in at the waist with the help of a thick black belt to define her waist.  She has the perfect ladylike silhouette with the punk rock twist that only Beth Ditto has. The statement necklace in black helps to ellevate the overall look while the black color does not detract from the floral print.  The pillbox hat and heels are the perfect finishing touches.

Beth Ditto continues to impress with her fabulous no-holds-bar fashion choices. This time she wore a spiked bodice s at London’s Wireless Festival this past weekend.

I always love her fashion choices but I think this time I would not be going in for a hug…ouch!

For the second time British plus size retailer Evans UK is teaming up with Beth Ditto. This season Beth is going to take you on a ‘magical mystery tour’ with a mix of 1940′s vintage, 80′s punk and current trends.

“We’re really excited; we are working on a great concept for young women with different styles, shapes and sizes. We have a look a decade, taking inspiration from the world’s greatest icons. Beth’s vintage-inspired prints - from Victorian to punk – look amazing. These very special pieces are all modernized versions, to be worn in the mix-matching Ditto style,” –  said Lisa Marie Peacock, head of design at Evans.

We always love seeing Beth’s quirky style, and I am looking forward to getting my hands on some of her pieces.

Beth Ditto is the lead singer of the band “Gossip”. One thing that we love about Ditto is she is not afraid to put her outlandish style out there. Her fashion sense has led her to a friendship with Kate Moss and a line for Evans UK.

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson has had some of the highest and lowest points in her life this year. The highest being the birth of her new son, David Otunga Jr. This joy and her resilient spirit radiates in her stunning looks she has chosen for the red carpet.

Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah has been in the spotlight for 20 years and still continues to shine. This year she released her fragrance, “Queen” exclusively for Macy’s and just released her album “Persona”. I love the dramatic long gowns she has been donning this year.

Christina Hendricks

Christina Hendricks has had a wonderful year professional and personally. Personally, Hendricks got married to Geoffrey Arend at Il Buco restaurant in New York City. Professionally, she has been a star on the AMC TV show Mad Men as the sexy and voluptuous secretary. We have to say, here at MP we definitely have a girl crush on Hendricks and are wowed by her curves!

Gabby Sidibie

Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibie has had a breakout year in 2009 with the release of her the movie “Precious”. Oscar buzz has been swirling due to her and Monique’s amazing performances. Gabby has also stepped into the limelight with her fashion scene. For the red carpet, Gabby tends to lean towards gowns in vibrant colors. In her free time, Gabby can be seen in a lot of clothing from the plus size retailer Torrid.

America Ferrera

America Ferrera has proved that, while she plays an Ugly Betty on TV, she is no Ugly Betty in real life. Ferrera has been wearing dramatically beautiful gowns on the red carpet and great cocktail dresses for social events. Her style has evolved wonderfully in the past year!

Gabi

Gabi is the blogger for YoungFatandFabulous.com. Gabi had “realized there were no quality fashion blogs for fat trendy girls. People have complimented me on my style for a while, so I decided to showcase my outfits and give other plus sized girls fashion tips all in one place”.

Crystal Renn

Crystal Renn has had an absolute breakout year in 2009. She released her biography, ‘Hungry’, and has landed huge modeling gigs in Elle Canada, V Magazine, and Italian Vanity Fair. As many New Yorkers, Crystal Renn wear mostly black, but is an expert at layering different textures and silhouettes together.

Whitney Thompson

Whitney Thompson has been finding her own fame away from America’s Next Top Model this year. She has recently launched her own scented candles and a jewelry lines on top of her modeling. Whitney leans towards curve enhancing cocktail dresses for events and dark denim, heels, and a jacket for going out. Looking forward to seeing more from this rising star in the next year!

Raven Symone

Raven Symone has been a Maddie + favorite for us at MP. Raven starred in Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair” and also lent her voice to the Disney’s Tinker Bell Franchise. Raven has shown us how to rock our curves in 2009!
