I am a fan of Terry Richardson, one of my favorite shoots that he has done is with Crystal Renn digging deep into a plate of spaghetti for French Vogue. In my eyes that is sensationalism done with an artsy eye, his newest shoot for Vice Magazine has left me with a much different taste in my mouth.

What are your thoughts on this editorial? Does this put the plus movement in the right direction?

Ford has turned models like Crystal Renn and Tara Lynn into two of the most wanted curvy models, and it’s with this same excitement to promote curvy bodies and a range of body-types that this book has created a great response in the fashion world. It’s not surprising that Ford is among the highest quality producers of plus-size talent when the agency is setting new standards by investing in their growing Plus division.

Gary Dakin, the head of Ford’s plus division, said that Ford ”wanted to show the beauty of these girls without mentioning size.”  The approach is refreshing in a climate where a model’s thinness or curves are often exaggerated and brought to the forefront of many fashion images. Each of the girls are presented in a way that highlights their natural beauty, with relaxed, casual styling and a lack of fussy hair or make-up.

With top agencies like Ford on board to promote and invest in body diversity in fashion, we can be more hopeful to see similar values echoed in body representation by prestige brands.

Marquita Pring, just like Crystal Renn, wants to get rid of the term “plus size models”. As she explains to NYMag.com:

“I’m a model. I’m doing the same catalogue and editorial jobs as the “normal” models. Slowly, as designers start incorporating bigger girls into their shows and campaigns, I’m confident people will start seeing us as normal, healthy models who are just as beautiful and capable as the girls we are used to seeing. I think curvier models are still viewed as relatively new to the fashion world. People are finally starting to embrace us, and we aren’t just being seen for our tits and ass, but for our overall beauty and ability.”

Daisy Lowe tells Asos magazine: “My dream is to see a lot more female shapes in ad campaigns when I look through magazines … my friend was working with Crystal Renn and said she thinks she’s only got a 38-inch hip. Karl Lagerfeld said he was going to embrace her womanly shape and then he just put her face on the ad campaign. Girls are starting to have tits in pictures, but I think it still needs to be about the curve … Real women have hips and an arse, yet loads of models in shows seem to have neither.”

Ford+ Crystal Renn was on Plus Model Radio on Monday, January 24th, to talk to Chenese Lewis about her experiences and thoughts on plus modeling.  Here is our summary of the radio show. You can also listen to the full podcast here!

The new face of Jimmy Choo, former size 14 model Crystal Renn is going against the odds of the fashion model industry. Crystal has been dealing with a lot of controversy from the public on her new-found figure. Throughout the interview she expresses the fact that the model industry needs to simply drop the labels of plus and straight from female models. She says “why can’t we just be models?”

When Crystal was asked about what place in the industry does the size 20+ women hold, she responded that their time is coming the way the industry is going. The idea is not to allow anyone to feel excluded because of size.

In the end Crystal really stressed that she feels the negativity toward her size range came from women feeling abandoned by her. Crystal Renn had a very large following of women who looked up to her as the face of plus size fashion and she dropped weight and went mainstream as the new face of Jimmy Choo. She stated that her health is what is important and that all that matters is her health and her happiness.

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and Crystal just wants everyone to remember that.

No one can say that Ford+ Model Crystal Renn is not having a great winter season. Her newest campaign with DSquared2 for Spring 2011 just came out that was styled by Katie Grand. She has also recently been featured in Jimmy Choo’s and Zac Posen’s latest lookbooks. NY Mag recently posted about this campaign and talked about her success recently, the “plus-size” category, and wanting to see more plus models, we could not agree with them more:

“This is great for Renn, who has become so successful that it doesn’t feel right to give her the “plus-size” distinction anymore, regardless of her size — something she’s championed for — but where are her peers? It’s great that one plus-size model is working at the same rate as top straight-size models. But there can’t be only one deserving of so much work. We want to see a multi-model campaign where all the girls are what is considered plus-size.”

We, also, would love to see more “plus” models in major campaigns next to straight size models. Bring the other models out!
