Jennifer Hudson was at Brooks & Dunn’s “Last Rodeo Show” at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand recently. Hudson joined the group that included Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. She looked perfect for the occasion with a loose fitting blouse, jeans, over-the-knee boots, and a form fitting vest to pull it all together. She is casual yet put together at the same time!

Today we are happy to introduce a guest blog from our MP friend and devote fashionista Marcy Cruz. Marcy recently took a jaunt to Europe and made a stop in London where she took a shopping trip to Evans UK.  Marcy kindly wrote up a guest blog about her shopping trip to Evans and the things she could not leave the country without!  Check it out here!

Ever been inside a store that took your breath away? A store where you didn’t know where to look first because everything looked fabulous? That’s how I felt during a recent shopping trip to Evans in London.

I had three days in London during a recent trip to Europe and had to visit Evans. Being a native New Yorker, I have shopped the gamut of plus-size stores from Avenue and Lane Bryant to even Target. I tend to gravitate towards color, prints, longer tops, clothing with an edge, jeans, and accessories. Evans has all of these things and more.

I went to the Marble Arch location which was very crowded during midday on a Tuesday! To my surprise, it wasn’t only my plus size sisters shopping in Evans. Some of my thin sisters were in there as well. I don’t blame them. Evans has a great selection of accessories from handbags with longer straps (can I get an AMEN?) to belts that came in sizes XS – XL.

I was also lucky enough to visit during a sale.  There were about seven racks of sale items positioned in the middle of the store. It was a nice selection of items £15 or less. The store has two floors.  The first floor is dedicated to their main clothing (casual tops, jackets, denim, trousers, accessories and causal dresses) and their second floor is dedicated to shoes (be-still my heart), workwear and lingerie/sleepwear.

Their salespeople were amazing. A few were plus-size themselves, which was nice to see. One girl actually took the time to help me shop and made sure I was tucked into a dressing room quickly, which I appreciated.  Their shoe section was extensive. It blew Avenue’s shoe section out of the water! Cloudwalkers what?

I managed to get a pair of gladiator sandals, which I could never find in the US since I have wide feet. Evans’ shoes tend to run true to size but some run big. To my delight, I actually had to go down a size for the sandals. The sandals were £37, which are not cheap (about $55USD), but I couldn’t pass them up.

All in all, I was very happy with my shopping excursion to Evans. I ended up buying a few tops, 2 purses, 3 pairs of shoes and 3 belts. I think the length of their tops are fabulous, most of them are 30” or more long. Their shoes fit great and are stylish, and I love the longer straps on the handbags. They even promote the longer straps on the back of the price tag, which I thought was very clever.

The downside was that I could not find a decent fitting pair of jeans. I am a 28 in jeans and I tried on both a 30 and 32, both did not fit. I was also not happy with their bra selection, which was very slim in-store. Those are my only gripes about Evans.

I loved them so much that as soon as I got home, I placed an order with them online. There was a trench coat I wanted that was an online exclusive. Shipping to the US is £7.99 (about $12USD) and takes about a week and a half. I really wish they’d launch an Evans here in the US.  But for now, it just gives me an excuse to go back to London.

That 70s Girl

The breezy floral print tops will be everywhere this coming spring and, as always, Evans is in head of the trend. The Butterfly Print Gypsy Top (£32) and the Sequin Love Tee (£18) would look great paired with jeans. The Floral Longline Shirt (£35) would be perfectly paired with the newest fashion item- jeggings (a jeans and leggings combo) or traditional leggings.

Chic Sophisticate

I love this look as it is such a comfy yet put together look. The Black Cable Cowl Knited Dress(£39.50) is perfectly paired with these wide calf Leather Stretch Boots (£60).

Black White Floral

As we have been seeing more darker, rock and roll looks this fall, it will carry over into Spring with a slightly different take. The Rose Print Top (£29.50) would be great worn with jeans. It could also be layered under a cardigan in a bright acidic color to make the look pop. The Floral Print 2 in 1 Dress (£29.50) is a perfect wear now item that will also be good for transitioning into Spring. Pair it with tights and knee high boots. Buckled Up Boots

Boots are always a fashion staple.  In the fall we saw studs and now the hottest trend is buckle interest.  The Suede Lace Boot (£40) and Stud Knee High Boot (£45) perfectly show this hardware trend.

Evans Look #1

I am obsessed with over the knee boots right now!  These Leather Over the Knee Boots are ideal for me as they have a wider calf, go over the knee, and are flat!  Perfect for running all over the city all day and night long!  I find these style of boots are best paired with leggings and a longer tunic or dress. It is also important to pair the right coat silhouette with this type of boot. I always go for a coat that is mid-thigh as it covers the tunic but still allows me to show off my hot boots. The Tweed Dolly Coat is is my pick!

Evans Look #2

The second look also features a great pair of boots!  Can you tell I am shoe obsessed yet?  This pair is a leather studded ankle boot.  I love how all of the celebrities are wearing this type of boot with dresses. The ankle boot is stylish and put-together while allowing you to show off your legs. This type of boot is best with a dress that falls above the knee. I really like the Red Rouched Dress and the Grey Lace Dress for a very sweet pairing with the ankle boot. Tights are a must in the winter to complete this look.

Evans Look #3

I really like this combination above. It’s great for running around on early weekend mornings where you want to look your stylish best but be able to put it together easily. The print on this Floral Print Top has a vintage look to it that I really adore.

So after I shopped Evans, I headed over to a couple other stores which offer up to a UK size 18 which is a US size 16.  I found this to be common in most UK stores, that they just go up to size 18, seems so simple to do and they do it! I hope it rubs off to the US stores as well.

It was my first time to the store River Island I can’t believe I have not heard of it before but I am so happy that I can now add it to my list of favorites.

I’m sure many of us can relate to Janet Jackson when it comes to the struggle with weight loss, self image and self acceptance. Just months after her brother’s Michael death; Janet finds the strength to sit down with Harper’s Bazaar and talk about her struggle with weight loss and how it is still affecting her today.

As far as I can remember Janet’s weight has always fluctuated and tabloids and press weren’t too far behind. Whether she gains or loses weight Janet has always been criticized for it.  She says her weight issues started from her being an emotional eater and there are many of us who struggle with this issue. I must admit I am one of those people. Food just makes everything better or at least it seems that way.

Janet knows the influence that she has over young women and that’s why she decided to write a book called True You. It focuses on dieting and self esteem. She hopes that she can reach out to young females and help build their self esteem. Females today are lucky to have these resources to turn to, she says she wasn’t this lucky when she was growing up and wishes she was.
