Daisy Lowe tells Asos magazine: “My dream is to see a lot more female shapes in ad campaigns when I look through magazines … my friend was working with Crystal Renn and said she thinks she’s only got a 38-inch hip. Karl Lagerfeld said he was going to embrace her womanly shape and then he just put her face on the ad campaign. Girls are starting to have tits in pictures, but I think it still needs to be about the curve … Real women have hips and an arse, yet loads of models in shows seem to have neither.”

Do you think Karl Lagerfeld did an injustice when he put Crystal Renn in his campaign but only showed her face?

On Karl Lagerfeld and his V Magazine photoshoot:

Yeah, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, but as plus girls we’ve been ignored for so long that it’s like you know they throw us a cookie and we’re thrilled about it. We are thrilled and we have to be thrilled cause we’ve never had anything, but at the same time I think we have to be smart about it: Great, I applaud Vogue for having a shape issue, but screw Vogue for not having shapes in every issue. It’s B.S. It’s frustrating. It’s infuriating because we have to be excited, we have to be thrilled that there’s one issue that has girls who eat. Great! But it should be in every issue. So I think we have to keep fighting. We have to celebrate and pat ourselves ont he back for what we’ve done, but we have to do more.

On the treatment of models:

Oh yeah, models get treated like crap. Worse than anyone. We get fed last, we don’t sleep, they treat you like nothing. When you think about it, everyone thinks modeling is so glamorous, but you don’t get to say what you wear, you don’t get to say how you look, what your hair color is, what length it is, where you live, what you do – you have no voice at all. And the bookers – because I was a straight-size model growing up in high schoool, and my hips were always one inch too big – and, yeah, you have 45-year-old men saying, “You’re too fat.” You’re a teenage girl. It’s really disgusting. It’s an awful industry and, yeah, there is no soul in modeling.

And her feelings about the modeling industry:

A lot of girls get depressed, some girls commit suicide, some girls starve to death, literally, and we kind of just don’t pay attention to it in the industry. We don’t really talk about it, but it’s very common.

I lived in a model apartment with all straight (size) models. One of the girls was on the lemonade cleanse for, I think, three weeks and her skin broke out all over in boils. But she was working in Paris every weekend and that’s all that mattered to her. And does the agency say anything? They’re not worried she’s too skinny, they’re worried she looks nasty because she has boils.

What do you think about her statements of the modeling industry?

Not all rumors are false!!

Plus size supermodel Crystal Renn made our dreams come true today when she walked the runway for Chanel 2011 Resort Collection in St. Tropez today (waiting for more images). We are happy to see that Karl Lagerfeld is now adding some new curvy shapes to his runway, and we are hoping that Lagerfeld continues on with this for fall fashion week and has put his dislike of plus size girls behind him.

Why do you think Karl Lagerfeld has had a change of heart?

There is a fabulous article in the UK newapaper  The Independent,  which addresses the increase in plus/real sized models who are now being requested for the runways, and photoshoots.

“There is now a real ripple of interest around models that are different from the standard catwalk model, who is too thin.”- Caryn Franklin

We want fashion to enhance women’s self-esteem. I’m delighted that Mark is using larger girls because it means [his last show] wasn’t a novelty to get everyone talking but a real commitment” – Caryn Franklin

All this increased attention is due to V Mag, Glamour Mag, Mark Fast, blogs, Karl Lagerfelds comments, and I am sure the photo from Sao Paolo fashion week did not help either.

Its great to see the modeling agencies responding by hiring more plus models for their boards

“The plus-size market used to begin at size 14, while the standard finished at 10. But there is now a lot more work for size 12 and up. We took on 20 more girls last year, which is a lot.”  - Sarah Travers

Grazia UK has highlighted the rise of the plus-size fashion industry in their December 14th article.  The article highlights how Lizzie Miller, the model known for being on page 194 of the now famous Glamour article, started the plus-size buzz.  Mark Fast was not soon behind with his fashion show that put both plus size and straight size models on the catwalk together. Then came the German magazine Brigitte and the US Glamour stating they were no longer going to use stick thin models but real, curvy women.  Now even Karl Lagerfeld who famously stated “…the world of fashion is about “dreams and illusions,” and that “no one wants to see curvy women,” in that world.” has jumped on board. He is one of the photographers for V magazines January issue that will feature famous plus size models, such as Crystal Renn. And, most importantly, there was the creation of Madison Plus. Yes, we can answer Grazia that this is the rise of plus size! And we will be here happily documenting it all for you!

There has been a lot of progress in the fashion world recently for accepting a real womans body and we couldn’t be happier. Magazines like Glamour and Marie Claire have spotlighted plus size models for editorial features and designers like Mark Fast have been using plus size models in runway shows.

Unfortunately, for every two steps forward there tends to be one step back, and this latest step back is delivered by Karl Lagerfeld with his most recent quote:

“Fat mummies sit there in front of the television with their chip packets and say skinny models are ugly.” He continued with  …the world of fashion is about “dreams and illusions,” and that “no one wants to see curvy women,” in that world.”

This leaves me very conflicted, as I adore Mr. Lagerfeld and his impact in the fashion world, not only with Chanel, Fendi, and Lagerfeld but also with his photography. He is a visionary and a rare talent. However, this quote upsets me most because Mr. Lagerfeld, who has struggled with his own weight, refuses to see the big picture of what he can do for fashion.  

The desire for real-sized women to see themselves reflected in fashion magazines and see themselves wearing Chanel or Fendi is overwhelming. Just ask Glamours’ editor-in-chief Cynthia Leive, or the designer Mark Fast, who both have learned first hand from the outpouring of support that woman of all shapes are out there and more than ready to wear trendy clothes that fit.

When Mr. Lagerfeld is ready for his change of heart, I will be the first to shop.
