The studio is buzzing with new spring merch from all our favorite retailers, and while we can’t seem to get enough bright colors in our look, we are also excited to try an opposite palette with soft watercolor neutrals. Color is a big trend this season and a key look we really love. Here in NYC we wear so much black and dark colors that seeing pop’s of color peeking out is really refreshing and helping to usher Spring in with a bang! There are many ways to wear color (like a bag) but an easy way to bring a brighter color to your look is to keep the focus on one piece. Take a cue from the downtown girls and some fashion-forward celebrities with a great pair of Bright Pants.

We’re lucky enough to have spring weather right now in Dubai, which is unbelievable because it’s supposed to be scorching hot by now. Too hot for denim shirts so I’m getting the most wear out of mine right now.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in the modeling industry?

I have always been interested in the fashion industry. When I was a baby I used to jump into a huge box of fabrics as if it was a pool. I thought about modeling but never really went after it until two years ago. I always thought you had to be a size two to model, but then I found out about plus size modeling and it opened the door to a new world. The rest is history.

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasures are shopping and mint chocolate chip ice cream. That combination is the best ever created.

What designers do you look to for inspiration?

In the past I looked to Christian Dior, he brought fashion back to the world after World War II. His designs worked for every body type. I am obsessed with Alexander McQueen. His pieces are so intricate and artistic. I also love Anna Scholz, she gives women with curves awesome silhouettes. She also loves to use color, and I love splashes of color in my outfits.

What does Madison Plus mean to you?

Madison Plus to me is a supportive community. They bring designers and models together.

What does the word “thong” mean to you? To me it means uncomfortable, wedgie guaranteed, butt floss. I know most women love them and think they’re sexy, feminine, and even chic…but I’m not one of them. Therefore, when one confronts me on a set, I tend to get that sick, “are you serious?” feeling in my stomach.

It’s one thing to walk around in front of a crew in boy shorts or above the belly-button briefs…and another to have your cheeks saying “HELLO” to a slew of strangers. I’ve only had the pleasure (ahem, sarcasm) to come across these embarrassment-enriched undergarments twice in my career…and both times I wanted to protest. Unfortunately, when you’ve been flown to South Africa to shoot underwear, there’s really no going back  - no way to say “Opps, um, I’m not willing to shoot in that”…unless of course you want to ensure that that client will never book you again.

So, the first time was unnerving and the second…bordering on a NO WAY situation.

The first was for a German catalog, which wasn’t as worrisome because I knew that no one I knew would stumble upon it. I was, however, a little surprised that they wanted a full-on butt shot. There’s nothing quite like having your cheeks hang out and a photographer telling you to “stick it out further” as well as coming in for a tight shot. My only solace following the shoot was that they assured me that my face would be cropped out (thank Goodness!) I did see the finished product a few months later and I must say, after all the airbrushing they did, not only did it look great but it didn’t look like my rear at all! (Sorry for not revealing my mystery bottom, but hey, here’s one of the shots from the shoot.)

The second time, I wasn’t so lucky. Yes, it was cropped…but in order to get the shot they wanted, I had to be TOPLESS! This, my friends is where I cross over from “I’ll be fine” to complete panic. There was no way I was going to walk on set topless AND have my booty exposed! I’m a plus-sized model, not a nude model! I demanded pasties at the very least…which ended up being makeshift nude-colored cut-up band-aids (which, honestly, worked like a charm) and requested that I cover my breasts with my hands at all times. The client sympathized with me and agreed to my terms. Regardless, it still felt very awkward to stand in front of 8 people holding my boobs and extending my butt out as far as I could. Those pictures have yet to surface, but I will say the crew was extremely professional and comforting throughout.

Shooting in these situations can be liberating for me. It pushes me to do things I thought I never would or could. I also can’t deny how comfortable these two experiences have made me with my body. After all, it’s just skin and it’s not like we don’t all have it…but, those little things called thongs still make me cringe. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it, but I’m happy to see the full figured market take the plunge into the sexier side of underwear because, well, all women deserve to have a sexy wedgie if they want one.
