Can Shapewear Reshape your Body Permanently?

Shapewear is intended to help smooth out your silhouette and slim down your waist. But can it reshape your body permanently?

The answer is no, according to Dr. Cynthia Donaldson, a board-certified OB/GYN who specializes in women’s health and wellness.

She explains that the main function of shapewear is to smooth out the body and make it look thinner, so it appears more toned and fit. However, these garments don’t actually do anything to change the shape of your body — they simply smooth out what is already there.

“Shapewear does not create toned muscles,” Donaldson said. “It smooths out bulges caused by cellulite or weight gain.”

How Shapewear Works

Shapewear is designed to smooth out bulges and provide support. It’s meant to help you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin.

But can it reshape your body permanently? Unfortunately, no.

Shapewear works by lifting, smoothing, and compressing the parts of your body that you want to make appear slimmer while smoothing out the bulges that make you look bigger than you are. If a garment makes you look thinner temporarily, it may be because it gives you a waistline where there was none before (or one that’s slightly smaller than before) and hides any extra inches near the hips or thighs. This is why many people say shapewear makes them look “longer” when they wear it under dresses or skirts that would otherwise cling to their bodies in unflattering ways.

Shifted Organs is an Unfounded Belief

The idea that wearing shapewear can permanently reshape your body comes from the fact that many people believe that their organs shift around in their abdomen when they put on tight shapewear. This is not true. (1)

The organs in your abdomen are held in place by a network of muscles and ligaments, which are pretty strong and sturdy. They stay in place, even when you bend over, sit down or lean forward.

What does happen when you wear a tight garment is that it pushes your internal organs up against the diaphragm (a sheet of muscle between the lungs) and into each other, creating pressure on certain organs like the liver, stomach, and intestines. This is why some people experience bloating after wearing shapewear for long periods of time or if they go up a size too quickly.

Gradually Reshape Your Body

Shapewear is designed to help you reshape your body gradually. It is not a miracle drug that will change your figure overnight. It is designed to work overtime and should be used along with a healthy diet and exercise routine.

It’s very important to note that shapewear is not a miracle cure. It’s a tool that can help you create the illusion of a smaller waist, fuller hips, and more defined derriere. It can also help improve your posture and make you more confident in clothing that fits properly. (2)

Shapewear will never make you look like a Victoria’s Secret model-and; that’s okay! In fact, it’s better than okay because it gives you a realistic perspective on what shapewear does for the body. It doesn’t work miracles, but it does help get rid of those pesky bulges that cause women frustration with their clothes. Be patient and give yourself time to see results from shapewear!

Shapewear Improves Your Posture

Wearing shapewear is not just about looking good. It can also help you to improve your posture and reduce back pain. Shapewear has been designed to pull in the tummy, lift the breasts and flatten the stomach. This can help to boost confidence and make you look slimmer. However, some women wear shapewear for support purposes only.

If you are suffering from back pain or have bad posture, then some specific type of underwear can help to correct these issues as well as remove any bulges around the waistline created by your bra or trousers.

Shapewear is not just for women. Men can also benefit from wearing shapewear. It can help them improve their posture and give them a more confident appearance.

If you want to look taller, it’s important to have good posture. If you slouch or hunch your shoulders, it makes you appear shorter than you actually are. The same thing happens if your pants are too loose and they sag in the back.

Wearing shapewear can help with both of these problems. A good quality body briefer will fit snugly against your body, so there’s no excess fabric that could cause the pants to sag or pull down on your shoulders when you sit down or bend over. In addition, the tight fit will help keep your back straight while you’re standing up straight and walking around all day long.
